THE LOWRY HOTEL | 50 DEARMANS PLACE | CHAPEL WHARF | MANCHESTER | M3 5LH

The latest Comme Ca Art exhibition, ’From Trinity to the Crescent’ by Not Quite Light looks at the surrounding area of Salford, close to where the Lowry Hotel is situated. The photographs, by NQL’s Simon Buckley are taken before dawn breaks on the city, invoking an ethereal quality to the ever changing industrial landscape.

“One evening in early 2015 I found myself in Manchester's Angel Meadow, where 40,000 people are buried, and where the living conditions in Victorian times were so appalling it inspired the work of Marx and Engels.

I watched the glowing light from the newly constructed CIS building fall onto the grave stones of St Michael's flags, causing my Not Quite Light project to begin with a simple question. What would the Mancunian souls beneath my feet, if magically brought back to life, think of the city that we had now created?

The first version of this work was titled 'From Old Mill To The End Of Empire'. It explored themes of heritage and regeneration along the northern edge of Manchester city centre, stretching from New Islington to Strangeways.

This exhibition looks at Salford, around Chapel Street and the River Irwell. The pace of change in both Salford and Manchester over the past few years has been extraordinary, with much of the older architecture being replaced with new developments.

The pictures also highlight Salford, a city too often considered a district of Manchester, when it actually has a long and rich history, and an identity equally as vital and vibrant. The changes being made in Salford offer an opportunity for it to once again establish itself as city in its own right.

I photograph at dawn as a metaphor for transition, from the old into the new. The photographs that I have taken are, in many ways, a conversation with the future. They are an archive of this time, and contain clues for historians that will remain essential long after you and I are dead.”
